Sage 50 alternative
A Sage 50 alternative,
compared honestly.
In the US, Sage Business Cloud Accounting was retired at the end of 2024, so Sage for a small business now means Sage 50. It is mature, strong on inventory and job costing, and it consolidates company files. VisiBooks offers a desktop consolidation report over its cloud ledger.

What Sage 50 is
A fair description first.
Sage 50 is desktop accounting software with a Sage-hosted cloud tier, sold on an annual subscription. It is strong on inventory, job costing, and industry reporting, and a common choice for construction, manufacturing, and distribution.
Premium and higher include multiple companies and consolidation at no extra charge. Consolidation builds a separate consolidated company from your company files; the files must share a release, accounting method, fiscal-year structure, and account types, and reconsolidating deletes and re-imports the consolidated transactions.
What it does well
CONSOLIDATION INCLUDED
Premium and higher consolidate companies into a separate company file.
INVENTORY DEPTH
FIFO, LIFO, and average costing, assemblies and bills of materials, and serialized tracking from Premium up.
JOB COSTING AND REPORTS
Job costing by phase and cost code, over 150 reports including industry-specific ones, and free QuickBooks data migration by Sage support.
Price
What each costs.
Sage 50 prices as published on its own site on September 21, 2026. One-user prices. Sage requires a minimum one-year commitment, and a lapsed subscription leaves your data read-only.

With several businesses
Where it gets harder.
Premium before multiple companies
Pro is one user with no multiple-company support, so an owner with several businesses starts at Premium.
Consolidation has rules
Companies must match on release, accounting method, fiscal year, and account types, and the result is a separate company rebuilt on reconsolidation rather than a live view.
Annual contract
Every plan carries a one-year minimum commitment, and data goes read-only if the subscription lapses.
Portfolio runs up to five companies on one subscription, each with its own ledger, chart of accounts, bank connections and statements, with cross-entity monitoring across all of them. Additional entities are $29 a month each.
Stay with Sage 50 if
When Sage 50 is the better choice.
- You need consolidation into a separate Sage company file within your existing Sage workflow.
- You carry inventory and need FIFO or LIFO costing, assemblies, or serial numbers.
- You want desktop software your accountant already knows, with job costing by phase.
Questions
Before you switch.
Is Sage Accounting still available in the US?
No. Sage retired Sage Business Cloud Accounting in the US on December 31, 2024, with access ending January 31, 2025. It is still sold in other countries. Sage directs US small businesses to Sage 50.
Is Sage 50 cheaper than VisiBooks for several businesses?
Often, yes. One Sage 50 Premium Desktop license at $1,236 a year covers multiple companies, which is less than VisiBooks Portfolio at $169 a month billed annually. The trade is desktop software on an annual contract against a cloud ledger with bank feeds and an agent-ready API.
Does VisiBooks consolidate like Sage 50 does?
Create a workspace and add your companies first, then view their P&L and balance sheet in the desktop app or API. Tagged intercompany pairs are eliminated only when both sides balance; mismatches remain visible and the report is labelled combined. No web consolidation view, consolidated cash-flow statement, or currency conversion yet.
How do I move from Sage 50?
Export your chart of accounts and journal history from Sage 50, then import them into VisiBooks from CSV, reviewing each account before it is created.
Run every company from one system.
Portfolio is $199 a month for five entities. The free plan is a single manual ledger — useful for seeing how VisiBooks works, not for running several businesses — so look at Portfolio if more than one company is why you are here.
